Through a range of breathing exercises, poses, and mindful movements you can embark on a journey of transformation. Our yoga instructor, Brice Dial, explains that one of the most effective techniques is using the breath as a tool to calm the mind. She's sharing some fundamental breathing techniques for relieving stress – providing tools to help you cultivate more balance in daily living for a stress-free 2023.
Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position, with your hands resting on your knees, palms facing down. Begin to inhale deeply through the nose, filling your stomach, rib cage, and then chest as you slide your palms up your thighs towards your hips. Lift your chin up, allow your head to drop back gently, roll your shoulders back, shoulder blades hug the spine, and tilt your tailbone back. Exhale completely through your mouth as you slide your palms back down towards your knees, tuck your chin towards your chest, round your shoulders forwards, shoulder blades move away from the spine, draw your navel inward, and gently tuck your tailbone. Continue to breathe like this with your eyes closed, inviting yourself to go deeper and deeper inward with each breath.
To complete the exercise, sit in stillness and feel the subtle changes in your energy and mind-body. Practice for 3 minutes minimum.
4 Part Breath
Sit in a comfortable cross-legged position, hands resting on your knees, and begin breathing in and out through the nose.
- Inhale for a count of 4
- Hold the breath in for a count of 4
- Exhale for a count of 4
- Hold the breath out for a count of 4
Allow each side of the breath to be equal in length, visualizing each side of the breath as a side of a square (extending the count if you find the 4 counts moderately easy). Continue with this practice for a minimum of 3 minutes. Slowly complete the breathing exercise and feel the stillness and silence within.
